Gridworks Opens Contractor Prequalification for Mozambique's USD 450 Million Chimuara-Nacala Line
Gridworks affiliate GW Mozambique Investments LLP and Eletricidade de Mocambique have opened a contractor prequalification for the Chimuara-Nacala Power Transmission Line, Lusa reported on 9 October. Bids close on 24 November. The package covers three lines: 272 kilometres of 400 kV between Alto Molocue and Namialo, 98 kilometres of 220 kV between Namialo and Nampula, and 92 kilometres of 220 kV between Namialo and Nacala-a-Velha, plus new and expanded substations at Namialo, Nacala-a-Velha and Nampula.
Gridworks puts total investment near USD 450 million and says the infrastructure should unlock about 600 MW of additional generation, move hydro and solar power north, and prepare a future interconnection with Tanzania. It presents LTEC as Mozambique's first privately funded transmission project, developed with EDM. The International Finance Corporation announced support in July 2025 for later phases, and the UK had earlier signalled financing support when the project was framed in May 2024.
Contractor selection is the next test after years of project preparation. If the build reaches financial close on the stated private-funding model, it will sit alongside Kenya's transmission PPP and Gridworks' Amari project in Uganda as another African wire deal that does not wait for the utility balance sheet to recover first.
