China's Green-Power Trades Grew 6.1 Per Cent Through August, a Third of the Pace of the Wider Power Market

China's power trading centres cleared 5,180 TWh in January to August 2026, up 19.2 per cent on a year earlier, according to National Energy Administration data released on 22 September. Trading within provinces was 4,026.4 TWh, up 21.5 per cent, and cross-provincial and cross-regional trading 1,153.6 TWh, up 12.1 per cent. Medium and long-term contracts made up 4,617.3 TWh and spot trading 562.7 TWh. Grid companies bought 563.8 TWh as agents for customers who have not entered the market directly.

Green-power trading, in which buyers contract for wind and solar output with its environmental attributes attached, reached 218.2 TWh, up 6.1 per cent. In August alone the market cleared 754.8 TWh, including 72.9 TWh of spot trades and 26.4 TWh of green power.

Green-power contracts were about 4.2 per cent of traded volume over the eight months, and their growth rate was roughly a third of the market's. Set against the 1,710 TWh of wind and solar generation the NEA reported for the same period, about 12.8 per cent of that output was sold under a green-power contract. Spot trades were about 10.9 per cent of the total.
